This small vineyard of 865 vines on 4 by 6 spacing with bilateral cordon trellising and cane pruning has a southwest exposure with a 15% grade.  This vineyard (1 commercial acre) is under year to year contracts and has consistently produced award-winning wines.  It rests at 1,000 feet elevation on volcanic soils in the new Fountaingrove District AVA.  The vineyard is registered as a commercial vineyard with Sonoma County and is certified sustainable.  Eight different varieties are planted, mostly Cabernet Franc, Petite Syrah, and Syrah.  Smaller plantings include Grenache, Mourvedre, Viognier, Semillon, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Grapes are sold to small boutique producers and home winemakers.  All grapes have been sold by annual contract (or kept for the owner’s home wine production) since the vineyard’s third leaf in 2010.  The vineyard has produced numerous award-winning wines including Petite Syrah that was best red wine at a recent Sonoma County Harvest Fair Amateur Wine Competition.  The vineyard is designed to break even financially.  There is a backup vineyard management company for spraying and work the owners have chosen to hire out.  The current owners enjoy farming this vineyard themselves and have done most of the critical processes together including fruit drop and harvest.  The vineyard is fitted for full irrigation by zone, but typically very little irrigation is needed.  Harvest here generally begins in early September and is finished around mid-October.  Total vineyard production in tons for the past few years is:

This vineyard could easily produce more fruit, but the current owners have strived instead for the highest quality by minimizing grape production to enhance fruit quality.  They mostly have repeat customers that are delighted with the vineyard’s grapes.  Most contracts are locked in by spring.  Even though this vineyard is small, its owners are members of the Fountaingrove District Winegrowers Association and participate with the Sonoma County Winegrowers Commission.
